About Jane Austen
Jane Austen was born in the English countryside in 1775. Her family were part of the landed gentry, a social class which features heavily in all of her published works. She spent four years at boarding schools, but her education was mostly overseen by her father, who encouraged her to read novels by his own favorite authors. This inspired the young Austen to take up a pen herself, and while her works were only published anonymously during her lifetime, her identity was revealed when her brother published her two other completed novels after her death in 1817.
