Franklin D. Roosevelt was born on 30 January 1882 to an affluent upper-class family in the state of New York. After a promising early political career, during which he attracted the attention of the then-president Woodrow Wilson, he was stricken by illness in 1921 and left partially paralyzed. After a successful stint as governor of the state of New York, he was first elected as president in 1932 and went on to be re-elected for a record-breaking four terms.
